April 17th: Covid-19 Update

Here at Upflex we’ve started a weekly Covid-19 digest to better help you understand the impact of the novel coronavirus around the world. You can find below a summary of the impact by country, for as many places as we can find information on. Please note that the term lockdown has different meanings in each country.

While we strive to keep this up to date and use data from the last five days, information is rapidly changing. What is true today may be different tomorrow, and we are including sources in order to help keep track of what is still relevant.

North America

United States

Death toll totalling 30,000 as of today in the United States.

As many as 29 states could potentially re-open on or before May 1st.

Reopening will be a three phase process: 1) Employers are still asked to promote tele-work. 2) Social distancing with groups of 10 still active. 3) However large venues such as restaurants, movie theatres and sporting events would re-open.

Here are some highlights by state:

  • In Ohio on Thursday, Gov. Mike DeWine said some businesses could begin to reopen on May 1.
  • NY lockdown will be extended until May 15th.
  • Wyoming, whose mortality rate is at 0.7%, is likely to end lockdown first. It may be ended in the upcoming week.
  • Michigan has a 7% mortality rate.

We clearly have not reached the peak of this pandemic yet which makes it unlikely the lockdown data is accurate.
